Program Details :

GLAC is partnering with the Oakland University and Washtenaw Community College to present the 'Indo-American Festival of Performing Arts - Sarovar 2012'. This is a one of a kind music festival held at several venues in SE Michigan including Oakland University & Washtenaw campus for the sake of global peace and harmony!

The festival will be held in May & June during the weekends featuring several concerts by top notch musicians, lecture demonstrations, fusion music, dance-drama and music concerts. Over 1000 people are estimated to participate in this fine arts extravaganza which includes food, entertainment and networking.

Nithyasree Mahadevan is an eminent Carnatic musician and playback singer for film songs in many Indian languages. Nithyashree has performed in all major sabhas in India and has presented her concerts in many destinations around the world. She has received multiple awards and honors, and has released more than 100 commercial albums.

Nithyasree is not only blessed with heavenly music but she is also previleged enough to be born in "Thiruvayyaru", the seat of Carnatic Music

The Celebrity Prapancham Sita Ram started his musical career as a Child Prodigy. He is A top grade flutist, music composer for All India Radio, Doordarshan and a top artiste of ICCR panel. His innumerable National and International awards and honours include UNESCO sponsored Asian Rostrum Global First Prize (1993), President Of India Awards twice (1957 and 2004),State Insignia Honor by King of Laos(1964), "Kalaimamani" title honour by Tamil Nadu Government long back in 1983 on a par with film personality Rajnikanth, and Madras Music Academy awards for his outstanding main concerts a number of times.

Dr Sitaram is many personalities rolled into one. He has served as Station Director, Chief Producer and Director of Programmes, academician, evaluator, resource person and judge. The musicologist in him felt happiness when he got his doctorate from the Bangalore University by taking the measure of the flute, to use his own words ‘horizontally and vertically’, thus tracing its evolution.

Prapancham, the musician has ‘unrivalled breath control, sensitive tonal chastity, perfect intonation and mediating phrases on the flute’ – to mention the words of Subbudu. The Kalaimamani Award came to him in 1983.

He performed his first full-fledged kutcheri (three hours) even before he was 10, and mridangam maestros Mani Iyer and Palani were among some of his listeners. Prapancham was introduced to the genius Mali, who accepted him as his disciple.  His other gurus Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, Sandhyavandhanam Srinivasa Rao and violinist Annavarappu Ramasamy.

Sailaja Pullela

Sailaja Pullela is an exponent in one of the leading Indian classical dance forms – Kuchipudi and was initiated into dance at a very early age, trained by eminent Natyacharyas Guru Sri. Chinta Adinarayana and Sri. M. SuryaNarayana Sarma. She continued her pursuit of perfection under tutelage of Kuchipudi Maestro “Padmabhushan” Guru Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam of Kuchipudi Art Academy, Chennai.

A “Natya Rani”, “Natya Visharada” awardee and ‘Diploma’ holder in Kuchipudi, Sailaja is a performer, choreographer, founder and director of Natya Tarangini Kuchipudi Academy in Canton, Michigan. She has many performances, lecture demonstrations and workshops to her credit and performed both as solo and in dance drama/ballet productions and toured all over India and in the USA and is highly acclaimed by the public and critic alike. Sailaja was recognized by Plymouth Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Canton for her collaboration at Fusion Festival-2007, recognized by Canton Leisure Services for Celebrate Dance on World Dance day 2009, secured a place in Guinness World Records – 2008 for her performance at Silicon Andhra International Kuchipudi Convention. Sailaja is the current member of Michigan Arts and Humanities Council Touring Directory. Natya Tarangini was awarded by United States census Bureau as a valued partner in raising awareness of and inspiring participation in the 2010 Censes. She has been recognized at 2011 Papanasam Sivam Music Festival. As an empanelled artist at Indian World Cultural Forum, Sailaja and her group has performed at 16th Annual International Ballet Fest of Miami in 2011. As a member of Canton Multicultural Committee, Sailaja organizes various multi-cultural events at Village Theater in Canton.

Sailaja has a Masters Degree in Integrated Biology and worked as Research Specialist at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
NATYAKALA DANCE SCHOOL CANTON, ANNARBOR, NORTHVILLE.
Mrs. Venkatalakshmi Lakshmanan hails from Chennai, and is the disciple of the late Sudarkodi Padma Ramanathan (Natyavisharadha Padma), the late Mr. Challapathi, Mr. SuryaNarayanamoorthi and Ms. Chandralekha -Kalakshethra. She has had trained for sixteen years and performs the Vazhuvur style of Bharathanatyam. She has been the recipient of the prestigious Kalaimagal award and has received numerous other medals to her credit. A regular performer at the Natyanjali festival, she has performed in her hometown Madras and other Cities in India at the Temples and Sabha programs. She is also a vocalist in classical carnatic music. Her gurus include Smt. Padma, Smt. Rajam of Chennai and Smt. Rohini Manjunath of Bangalore. In the capacity of carnatic vocalist, she also performed in Thirvaiyaru Thyagaraja festival in Tamilnadu. She trains with vocal music as well in Natyakala, since combined training of Indian dance and music is deemed most effective. Started 1999. Graduated 11 students.

Madurai Thirumalai Nambi Seshagopalan learnt music under his mother, and later under tutelage of Ramanathapuram C. S. Sankarasivan. He holds a degree in science from Madras University and a degree in music from Madurai University where he serves as professor of music. He is a also a composer and a master of the veena and harmonium and an exponent of harikatha.

Sumkali offers a fusion of India's music with a dash of jazz, funk, rock and classical.  Most of the group's musicians were raised on jazz, funk, rock and classical music, but with Sumkali perform Indian music.

Siva Punya Gana Mani Brahmashri Papanasam Sivan’s birth anniversary is celebrated every year in September. He has composed over 2000 songs in both carnatic music and film songs. His compositions include varnams, kritis, operas and all types of compositions typically rendered in all concerts. To propagate the works and compositions of Papanasam Sivan, the Sivan Fine Arts Academy conducts annual music and dance competitions to showcase the talents of students of Vocal, Instrumental and Dance.

Siva Punya Gana Mani Brahmashri Papanasam Sivan's birth anniversary is celebrated every year in countries like Singapore, Malysia, Australia, Germany, London, France, Norway, Denmark, Canada, Sanjose, LA, for the past 6 years. This year it will be celebrated at Houston, Detroit, Dallas, Chicago and many parts of USA. We will be conducting competitions on songs of Papanasam Sivan on vocal, violin, veena, mridangam and bharathanatyam
